The keepers of our rice terraces

On our partner farms in the hills, rice has been grown the same way for centuries. We spent a season learning from the people who keep it that way.

The terraces climb the hillside in long, curving steps, each one held in place by hand-built stone walls. Water moves from the top to the bottom over several days, feeding every paddy on the way down.

Old knowledge, new markets

For generations these families sold their rice at local markets for whatever price the day would bring. Through our partnership they now sell at a fixed price, agreed before planting, to bakeries and restaurants who value exactly what makes their rice different.

“We did not come to teach. We came to buy, and to learn.”

The terraces are not a museum. They are a working system, and one of the most sustainable ways to grow food that we know of.
